BP Chemicals (now INEOS Chemicals)

iPlanUltimate was introduced to Saltend in 2004 by BP Chemicals and continued under INEOS ownership following their 2020 acquisition. Since implementation, it has become an essential platform for managing everything from small-scale maintenance tasks to multi-million dollar turnarounds.

The Brief

BP Chemicals needed a centralised, collaborative solution to manage plant shutdowns and routine maintenance efficiently. Traditional systems lacked visibility, resulting in information gaps and an increased risk of oversight and costly mistakes. BP required a platform accessible to both internal teams and external contractors to ensure seamless collaboration.

Effective maintenance management starts with effective information management. Without full access to accurate, real-time maintenance data—or the ability to analyse and act on it—critical tasks can be missed, leading to costly risks and unplanned downtime. iPlanUltimate was selected for its robust control, transparency, and real-time accessibility.

The Solution

Before adopting iPlanUltimate, the Saltend site faced a series of challenges with its existing shutdown management systems. These legacy systems were outdated, difficult to modify, and relied heavily on expensive third-party quantity surveyors. More critically, data was siloed and often only accessible by external vendors, limiting the site’s control and visibility.

BP needed a comprehensive, flexible shutdown management tool that would integrate with their evolving systems, support collaboration between internal teams and contractors, and provide full transparency across all planning stages.

iPlanUltimate offers:

  • Fully integrated modules for initiation, scoping, planning, readiness, scheduling, and execution.
  • Real-time collaboration between BP/INEOS and its maintenance providers.
  • SAP integration for seamless data exchange (orders, operations, estimates, and status updates).
  • Information checkpoints to maintain control, reduce risk, and prevent costly delays.

The system’s flexibility and user-friendly design have empowered site-wide adoption—from planners to frontline teams—leading to a standardised, transparent, and efficient shutdown process.

Moving across to iPlan felt like a very hard decision when we were facing it but it has proved to be
the right decision. Implementation was easier than we had feared and we are able to do things
now which we had not dreamed of trying in the past. We have taken a giant leap forward and it’s
not just the planners working in isolation, everyone on site can pull together with common
processes, share information and work together as one team. I wouldn't dream of trying to deliver
a shutdown without iPlan.
