iResponse – OilTanking Disaster Simulation Platform

OilTanking commissioned IAMTech to build a custom disaster response simulation tool — iResponse — to help safety teams model tank fires, gas dispersions, and explosion scenarios. While similar software existed, it required advanced scientific knowledge to operate. The challenge was to create a powerful yet user-friendly solution accessible to operational teams, not just specialists.

The Brief

OilTanking needed a bespoke software platform to simulate complex disaster scenarios based on site-specific data. Existing tools were overly complex and not intuitive for field engineers or emergency planners.

The solution had to deliver scientifically accurate modelling outputs in an easy-to-use interface, supporting both real-time response planning and long-term investment decisions.

The Solution

IAMTech collaborated with Teesside University academics to translate complex scientific formulas into a high-performance, user-centric software application. The system included calculators for modelling thermal radiation, overpressure effects, and toxic gas dispersion — based on inputs like tank size, product type, weather, and topography. Designed for operational users, the interface simplified complex modelling without sacrificing scientific integrity. iResponse enabled safety teams to visualise risk zones and test scenarios, becoming a critical decision-support tool for emergency response planning and site safety optimisation.

IAMTech turned a complex scientific modelling challenge into an accessible, user-friendly application that our teams could actually use in real-world scenarios. The iResponse tool helps us visualise and plan for worst-case events with speed and accuracy — it’s become an essential part of our emergency preparedness strategy.
