Oil Tanking - iResponse Case Study
Oiltanking is one of the world's leading independent storage partners for oil, chemicals, gases and dry bulk. Oiltanking owns and operates seventy-five terminals in twenty-three countries with a total storage capacity of more than 22.8 million cubic metres.
Fire prevention, adequate fire protection systems and emergency preparedness are important elements of Oiltanking's HSSE strategy. Consequence modelling, in particular thermal radiation and dispersion of vapours are essential for risk evaluation of its terminals and the implementation of preventive measures.
Traditionally Oiltanking would employ risk consultants to calculate thermal radiation models, as part of their design process for fire protection equipment as well as the sites' specific emergency response planning. This sometimes leads to variations between heat radiation modelling results.
To harmonise the heat modelling throughout the company, Oiltanking evaluated available software solutions and decided to develop an application together with a consultant - CPD Limited.
The Solution - iResponse
Oiltanking sought a software solution which would be intuitive, easy to use and ultimately allow a standardised approach for heat radiation modelling.
We evaluated a number of systems that would satisfy our requirements for the standardisation of heat radiation modelling and we found CPD to be the consultant who promised us to develop the most cost and time effective solution in close co-operation with our internal experts

How Oiltanking use iResponse
iResponse is currently used by many Oiltanking employees in various departments, e.g. Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE), engineering and operations across the world.
It is most commonly used for consequence modelling to calculate thermal radiation, vapour dispersion and overpressure scenarios. iResponse has also proved a useful tool for aiding the process of evaluating and enhancing fire protection equipment and installations.
In addition, iResponse has been used as part of site audits, where Oiltanking can show relevant local authorities their emergency response plans, as well as a demonstration of their ability to instantly update these scenarios should an emergency arise with different conditions.
In summary; iResponse has effectively supported Oiltanking in achieving compliance of their own high-standards.
iResponse has simplified the process of heat radiation modelling for our colleagues worldwide. We have been able to effectively roll out the application, safe in the knowledge that the results are of a standardised nature.
iResponse is easy to use and we have found it to be a complementary asset of our fire protection standard and of our HSSE tool box.
